Homemaking ABCs

Alli tagged me for this alphabet meme, so here it goes!

Aprons- Y/N? occasionally when cooking… should wear it all the time, though, since I usually end up with something on the front of my shirt. When I'm pregnant, I always remember to wear one, though, since I've got a belly sticking out to remind me!

Baking- Favorite thing to bake? Depends on my mood… something tasty, definitely

Clothesline- Y/N? not a true clothesline… I’ve got a makeshift one by stringing a rope between fences on the side of the house. I plan on having something a little more permanent (and sturdy) someday

Donuts- Ever made them? Not by myself or since I was little, but I have fond memories of making them growing up… topped with powdered sugar.

Everyday- One homemaking thing you do everyday? Unload and reload the dishwasher.

Freezer- Do you have a separate deep freezer? We’ve got one in the garage, and it is full of meat, bread, veggies, meals…. In fact, we’d like a garage refrigerator to go with it.

Garbage Disposal- Y/N? Yes—the one in the sink… and the dog on the floor who grabs the crumbs that hit the ground

Handbook- Y/N? what exactly does "handbook" refer to? Is this a fancy way of saying purse? Then, yes. Is it a fancy way of saying “personal organizer”? Then, no… I’ve tried to carry a calendar organizer in my purse and it never stays up-to-date… I had to spend too much time transferring appointments and scribbles from the kitchen calendar.

Ironing- Love it or hate it? Huh??? Ironing? What’s that? :) I only iron when it's an absolute necessity... and that's about once a year around the time of a company Christmas dinner!

Junk Drawer- Where is it? In the kitchen next to the refrigerator.

Kitchen- Design and decorating? Red walls, white cabinets… and ugly yellowed linoleum that looks more dingy because of the white cabinets.

Love- What is your favorite part of homemaking? Knowing I’m doing it for my family… and the few moments I have to enjoy the sense of accomplishment of a really clean and organized room… before the kid-tornado tears through

Mop- Y/N? yes… and I do use it! Though probably not as often as I should. In the in-between using the mop-mop times, I will "hand mop"-- you know, with a paper towel!

Nylons- Wash by hand or in the washer? Haven’t worn them in a long time… But when I do, I throw them on handwash cycle in the washer….

Oven- Do you use the window or open it to check? Use the window to get an idea, but have to crack the door to really see… can’t tell if something is browning with a tinted (or is it just dirty?!) window.

Pizza- What do you put on yours? veggies.

Quiet- What do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment? There really aren’t many quiet moments in my day… at least not until the kids are asleep at night! Sometimes if we have a few minutes before school’s out and we’re already there, I’ll read a book or something… but, even then, it’s almost never quiet while I’m reading.

Recipe card box- Y/N? No… I have a small photo album with index cards slid into the picture slots and I’ve got my favorite recipe books with favorite recipes stuffed in… Ones that aren’t on index cards. I used to have a box… Now it’s a Strawberry Shortcake house or treasure chest or something.

Style of house- Uh… is 'cute' a style?!? I don’t know what you call it… colonial, maybe? Or does it have to be an old house to be colonial? Neo-colonial. Well, how about you look at the picture and tell me what that’s called!

Tablecloths and napkins- Y/N? paper napkins always… a tablecloth rarely… like at Thanksgiving or maybe when company is over.

Under the kitchen sink- the kitchen trash, kitchen trash bags, dishwasher detergent, kitchen cleaning supplies (hidden behind the trash), aluminum foil, plastic wrap, wax paper, food baggies, a small supply of bar mop towels for wiping up water splashes and drips around the sink and on the counters (something I started when I was a dedicated flybaby)

Vacuum- How many times a week? I probably run the vacuum more than once a week, but I might only hit each carpeted area one time during the week. Depending on the circumstances, it may be more… like if someone has dropped a chip and crushed it into smithereens or has rolled a tonka dump truck full of sand through the family room or has emptied the hole punch on the rug… (and depending on other circumstances, I suppose it could be less!)

Wash- How many loads do you do a week? Fortunately, my washer has a very large capacity because, unfortunately, seven people go through quite a bit of laundry… even with the imposed mandatory recycling rule!

X's- Do you keep a list of things to do and cross them off? Depends. Sometimes I do, other times I don’t. Sometimes it is very rewarding to see that I’ve crossed off so many things… other times it is very discouraging to see how many things are still on my list. It all depends on what the list is.

Yard- Who does what? Monkey Daddy does all the hard work… and he does a great job at it!

ZZZ's- What is your last homemaking task for the day? The last-minute room rescue of grabbing the random things that clutter up the house… the one dirty sock here and the toy there and the newspaper here and the scrap-paper doodles there… the quick dash to make things ready for when I come down the next morning… so I wake up to a fairly organized home!
